About Fathima Refai….
Coming from one of the seasoned families in the gem industry of Sri Lanka, her passion for gems and jewelry was inherent from her childhood. The daughter of Mohamed Refai, a prominent name in the gem industry in Sri Lanka, the family owned many gem mines across the island, which is known for its Ceylon blue sapphires and Padmaranga (named after the island’s lotus flower) sapphires.
One of Fathima’s early memories of her father was visiting the mines with him and watching the miners sluicing away the clay and gravel in their conical shaped vessels, a step in the process of extracting gemstones. She would eagerly wait for that moment where the colored stones appear through the clay and sand slurry. She often speaks about how she remembers her father looking at them through the naturalness of the sunlight to find imperfections.
Her father, who is an artist himself, played a pivotal role in her journey in designing jewelry. He was a free thinker and encouraged Fathima to see art in every aspect of life. They would spend hours sketching and he would teach her how to speak the language of art. He would take Fathima to her uncle’s workshop to watch how the raw stones are perfectly cut into faceted and cabochon gems.
Being one of the very first Sri Lankans to graduate from the world's oldest gem institution, the Gemological Association of Great Britain, her father became a pioneer in many aspects of the gem trade. From the process of mining, to lapidary, to grading and trading of gems.
In a recent post Fathima mentions how she draws a lot of inspiration from her father,
“I still have his zoology books from the time he went to school (1954), they have detailed and intricate drawings of specimens visualized under the microscope. At that time there were no cameras attached to microscopes as we do now, I am still amazed as to how he could capture every detail of the microscopic samples on paper, almost as if they were taken using a camera. I have framed a few pages and hung them up on my wall; they inspire me every day...”
She learnt to see art in everything in life from him, in science, in nature, in life in general. This is reflected in all her designs and the jewelry lines. Fathima looks at jewelry as not just jewelry but as a piece of art work. Her ability to incorporate concepts and philosophies in life into her designs is truly unique.
Fathima compiled all her designs and created The Fibonacci Series as a platform to showcase the artworks and empower women through art and design.
This is what Fathima has to say about her jewelry....
“What I create for her are pieces that resembles the trueness of who she is- to conform to her identity and actuality. Something which will belong to her/ she will own for a timeless period…”
